Opening your eyes is the hardest part — to the fact that the workplace is now virtual, that people are spread across office sites with some fully remote, but mostly, that a perspective change is required to succeed in this new reality.

🎥 Coming soon - the ability to create async "Video Mail" with the Slack FREE Version and in Microsoft Teams! As part of our hybrid skills workshops, for years we have been teaching teams how to incorporate Video Mail into their hybrid and remote team communication toolkit since it's an especially great way to provide info without scheduling yet another meeting.

In many situations using Video Mail can more effective than written communication because we can talk faster than we can type and we can add so much more context when communicating verbally via video and through screensharing.

It can be a great replacement to live meetings for info that is just an update or FYI, for providing some inspiration or food for thought, for visually describing instructions for a simple task, or even as a recap to a long meeting (who has time to watch a full hour long meeting recording, when they could watch a 5 min video recap of the next steps, decisions, and key discussion points?!).

There are already some fantastic tools for creating Video Mail (Loom, Vidcast) but it will be even more convenient for it to be integrated right into MS Teams and Slack!

📣 For Microsoft Teams users – It was recently announced that ‘Video Clips’ will be rolling out soon (exact date TBD). Users will be able to record clips directly in a chat or channel through a Video Icon Button that will be positioned directly next to the Send Button for any new conversation or reply. You can also do some light editing of the video before you hit send.

📣 For Slack users – Starting September 1, 2022, those using the free version will have access to the ‘Clips’ feature. If you are on the paid version, you already have access to ‘Clips’.

We’ve all been there...You are on a video call and someone tries to ask a clarifying question, and so begins the awkward dance of - “No, you go ahead.” “No, you.” Those types of interruptions are an important and natural part of a flow of conversation when you are in-person together, but when on a video call, it can feel like it's derailing the flow of the meeting which can cause people to hold back from speaking. To compensate for that we often facilitate meetings through the more formal taking of turns to talk.

Microsoft recently added functionality in their Teams video calls to enable more natural "crosstalk".

💡Why these interruptions felt stilted before:
The software is trying to prevent feedback since if one person is talking, the sound of their voice is coming out of the speaker of everyone else's device. If another participants starts talking, their microphone would pick up both their voice as well as the sound coming out of the speaker, creating an echo and a feedback loop. So, most video conferencing software essentially mutes your microphone unless you're talking. When you start talking, the software has to recognize your voice and do all of the processing required to filter out any background sounds. That usually results in a small delay before anyone can hear what you're saying.

🎉 What Microsoft has done about it:
Through an artificial intelligence model trained with 30,000 hours of speech samples, Teams is now able to eliminate the echo that happens when multiple people are talking to make their conversation more fluid.

For those using – Bring on the crosstalk!
