Opening your eyes is the hardest part — to the fact that the workplace is now virtual, that people are spread across office sites with some fully remote, but mostly, that a perspective change is required to succeed in this new reality.

⑼ Leaders of virtual teams need to especially show vulnerability. In this series I’m sharing my top 10 tips from my 10 years of #remotework.

I’ve had to work on this, especially as an introvert – to actively & publicly share my story through multiple communication tools with my teams.

I came to realize that the more open I was and the more I shared – the wins and the losses, my strengths and my opportunity areas – the more others were willing to share back with me. This enabled trust to build faster, especially when I might only be in person with my team a few times per year.

Here are a few tactics to try to bring out your vulnerability:

➡️ Create an “about me” one-pager that includes photos of your family, pets, hobbies, & favorite places, and also shares your strengths, work style, hot buttons etc.

➡️ Send short videos that introduce your team to your household or gives a tour of your remote work location

➡️ Reflect on what’s hard by sending a note each Friday that recaps what you learned that week, including what was hard for you personally or professionally

➡️ Ask your team to watch Brené Brown's “A Call to Courage” Netflix special & debrief
